The Man came home from a visit with his dad this past weekend, arms full with new toys. Not kid toys, well because he is 14 and his taste in toys has changed. He comes in loaded down with hand me downs - great ones - 2 fishing poles, a tackle box full of lures, a canteen and then his favorite: a knife.
He pulls it from it's sheath all excited. The handle is hollow, containing a sharpening thingy and a small piece of rope. When closed there is a compass on the end of the handle.
Now tomorrow he heads out with his Boy Scout troop for a week helping lead younger scouts on a camping competition type weekend. He decided a few days ago this is perfect timing. He can take his new knife. But he can't.
Him: I can't wait to take this this weekend.
Me and Will (in unison): no you can't
Him: Yes, I can (not disrespectful)
Will: no you can't, it is a sheath knife, and those are not allowed at scout events
Him: but it is a survival knife. See, it has a compass
Will: but it is still a sheath knife, you can not take it
Him: but I could . . .
Will and Me (in unison): NO! it is still a sheath knife.
So Tuesday evening The Man and Will are talking in another room when I hear Will say, "you cannot take a sheath knife."
Later, I asked about the conversation. The Man had decided a way that the knife would be allowed.
With enthusiam and KNOWING he had found a solution: "I will take it just so I can show the younger scouts what NOT to bring to scout camping events." He tried.
Smiles!
Oh, the answer is still no!

At least he has persistence:-)
Have to give him an A for trying! I hope he enjoys camp.
Haa haa He is a smart young man indeed. I can just imagine the smile of satisfied pride at his conclusion.
Brilliant...
(the old softie) LOL
Too funny! He had it figured, didn't he?!
My boys were in Scouts, too - about 20 years ago! Hard to believe how time flies!
At one time there would be one in every pocket. When I was young every lad carried a pocket knife. (Called Penknife.) Hope times have changed.

You were right when you described them as toys. Little boys never grow up. :)
Haha! Smart kid!
Aww...it does sound like a really, really cool knife!
LOL - How many ways can a mom say, "No?" I love that he wasn't just persistent - he evolved strategy - and that is totally impressive! What a great load of gifts, too!
LOL! Kids are so creative!
Ha! Good one! Points to The Man for trying!
Congrats on your POTW

Thank you! I had no idea - glad I had a minute to check out the land of blog!
That was a clever idea all right. Well done him!
I foresee a future in the diplomatic corps. for The Man :-) That was a diplomatic negotiation if ever there was one.
Very fun, and congratulations on the POTW mention over at Hilary's blog.
Congratulations on POTW!! Don't you just love how clever kids are these days? And you sound like very sensible parents. I like that :-)
